Charles Theodore (Karl Theodor) became Elector of Bavaria in 1777. Concerned by secret societies operating outside state control, he issued edicts in 1784, 1785 and 1787 that banned unauthorised associations and named the Illuminati and the Freemasons. His government's investigations and publications brought the order to an end.
