- Author of a conspiracy theory about the Illuminati (interpretation)
John Robison was professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and a respected physicist. In 1797, independently of Barruel, he published Proofs of a Conspiracy, alleging that Freemasons and the Illuminati were plotting against the governments and religions of Europe.
Like Barruel's work, it relies on assertion rather than evidence, but it was widely read in Britain and America and helped shape the later myth.
