The Eye Was Never Theirs: Separating Symbol from Story
Why the Eye of Providence and the pyramid have nothing to do with the Bavarian Illuminati.
Search for "Illuminati" and you will see an eye in a triangle above a pyramid. Neither belongs to the Bavarian order.
The eye
The Eye of Providence is Christian iconography — an image of God's watchfulness — found in churches and paintings across Europe from the seventeenth century.
The pyramid
The unfinished pyramid comes from the reverse of the Great Seal of the United States, adopted in 1782. The date at its base, 1776, marks American independence. The overlap with the Illuminati's foundation year is coincidence.
Where the link came from
The connection between these images and the Illuminati was made in the twentieth century, in conspiracy literature and popular culture. The order's documented imagery was classical — above all the owl of Minerva, emblem of wisdom.
How to check a claim
Ask for a primary source: a document, seal or object from the order itself, dated between 1776 and 1785. For the eye and the pyramid, none exists.
