The Bavarian Edicts of 1784–1787: How the Illuminati Were Suppressed

Three edicts, a house search and a government publication: how the Elector of Bavaria brought the order to an end.

The Bavarian Illuminati did not fade away; it was suppressed, in stages, by the government of Elector Charles Theodore. The sequence is well documented.

22 June 1784: a general ban

The first edict prohibited all communities, societies and brotherhoods formed without the sovereign's approval. It did not name any society. Some lodges and Illuminati groups initially argued that it did not apply to them. Read the archive entry.

Denunciations and dismissals

Former members, some disaffected, gave evidence to the authorities. Officials and teachers suspected of membership faced questioning and dismissal.

2 March 1785: the Illuminati named

A second edict explicitly prohibited the Freemasons and the Illuminati. Adam Weishaupt lost his professorship and left Bavaria, eventually finding refuge in Gotha with Duke Ernst II. Read the archive entry.

The authorities searched the house of Franz Xaver von Zwack at Landshut and seized a large quantity of the order's papers.

1787: publication and a final edict

The government published a selection of the seized papers as Einige Originalschriften des Illuminatenordens, intending to discredit the order. On 16 August 1787 a third edict renewed the ban with severe penalties. Read the archive entry.

What followed

In Bavaria the order had ceased to exist. Former members elsewhere corresponded for some years, but there is no evidence of any continuing organisation. Within a decade, however, the order's very suppression would be used as "proof" of its hidden survival — the subject of How the Illuminati Myth Was Made.
